24 Years and Going....

About this time twenty four years ago, I was taking a shower. I wanted to be all "gussied up" for my first date with Angie. She and I had met in a Computer Information class at NLU in the spring semester of 1984. There's an interesting story regarding how we actually met, but I'm saving that for another blog.

I arrived at her apartment in my un-air-conditioned 1968 Ford Bronco. When she answered the door, I thought I was looking at a supermodel. She was standing about 3 or 4 inches taller than me and was radiantly beautiful. She looked down at me and said "I'm really uncomfortable in these high-heel shoes...do you mind if I change?" She went to her bedroom and returned in some flat shoes. She was still a tad taller than me, but it wasn't as noticeable. We went out to eat at the Warehouse #1 Restaurant. A bunch of my buddies had been there for Happy Hour and were waiting to see me with my date. Long-story-short...they invited themselves to our table and dined with us. Later we went to a club and danced.

Towards the end of the night, I took her back to her apartment. She invited me to come inside for a glass of Coke. Back then, I had given up drinking Coke, but I wasn't going to turn down the offer. Angie opened a brand new 2-liter bottle and handed me a glass. I thought to myself...I'll drink that bottle dry just to sit and talk with her...and I did...the whole 2 liters.

So, that's how the journey began...24 years ago tonight. What a date!

Archeologists, Clinton, and So I Married an Axe Murderer

My buddy, Scott Bonner, came over last night. He makes me laugh so hard! So I thought I'd introduce him to you. The first part of the video was actually filmed a couple of weeks ago, but I thought it would make sense to put the two videos together for background info. Try to keep a straight face...or at least forgive me for showing this to you.

The Mark of a Professional

What makes one person stand out above the crowd? What is the "it" factor and where does it come from? I guess the answer to that will have to come from brighter minds than mine. But I do know one thing....I know "it" when I see it.

My gangster buddy, Caleb, was learning a dance last night and he was struggling like everybody else. Notice how things changed when the spotlight was on, though. Caleb knows how to deliver the goods when it's "go time." That's the mark of a professional if you asked me.

Reality...Bites Back

We officially open "Reality...Bites Back" at the Cork Room on Friday, March 28th. We've put a lot of hours into this project and hope that people will come in throngs to see it. There are some really neat characters in this murder mystery. I know I've had a ton of fun playing Pete.

To whet your appetite, I'm offering a few pictures from the rehearsal on Tuesday night. Tell your friends to come one, come all and enjoy the show.

I Love the Brrrrrrr....Beach

Was it cold at the beach? Listen to the howling wind on my video and then tell me what you think. Daniel was itching to get out to the water and ride his skim board. It was way too cold for me, so I stood at a distance and filmed. Eventually, he jumped in and splashed around like it was the middle of summer. Kids!?! You'll notice no one else from our party was in the water, though. I love the beach as much as the next guy, but it was freaking freezing Mr. Bigglesworth!

On a side note, we measured Daniel tonight and he is officially taller than me now. Do you know how that makes me feel? Proud and yet defeated...he's only 12!

Piling On

For Easter this year, we went to Orange Beach, Alabama. It's just outside of Gulf Shores for those who may not know. Angie's parents had the foresight to purchase some property down there over thirty years ago. Trust me, they've gotten their money's worth out of it. Angie spent most of her summers at their camp. On a typical day, she'd go to the beach in the morning and then go skiing at Lake Shelby in the afternoon. What a life!

Well, back to my story. We went to eat at King Neptune's in Gulf Shores on Good Friday. Meredith was still not happy about the mustache I grew for my role in "Reality Bites Back." Watch the video slideshow to see what I have to put up with when my family gangs up on me.

Sign of the Times

I inspected a house south of Winnsboro Road last summer. As I was driving north on Wilson Street, I noticed a sign on a corner just in front of a convenience store. I've heard that signs are supposed to grab your attention. Well, this one sure did.

But I wonder...is this what they really meant to say?

Focus, Baby, Focus

I have focus issues. I like to move from one thing to another...abruptly...it's just the way God made me. When I'm on a project, I can stay laser-beam focused on it until the task is complete. (You'll get to see that in the attached video.) But getting me into tractor beam can be a problem at times.

A gentleman greeted me after a show at the Strauss one night and said he knew my father, but he didn't "know" my father. He continued by stating that my dad always moved from one interest to another so quickly that no one could keep up with him. Perhaps you've heard me say "I was born my papa's son, when I hit the ground I was on the run." Now you can appreciate how truthful that statement is.

Anyway...let's roll the video. My friend, Chris Coon, wrote some "lyrics" and I was trying to put them to music. So I picked up the guitar, came up with a nice little bass line, and tried to fit the words into the music. I've written hundreds of songs throughout my life. Problem is...I can't remember the music to most of them anymore. So lately, I've been videotaping my hand movements so I can remember the chords. Pretty smart, huh? What I want you to pay special attention to is the focus I have while playing the song. Near the end, my phone starts ringing, but I have the presence of mind to finish the song just before it's too late to answer the call. Focus, baby, focus.

Nobody Said It Was Going To Be Easy

As most of you know, I have three kids. What you may not know is all three are creative and artistic in some form or fashion. John happens to be very musically talented. He plays guitar, bass, and some percussion instruments. Meredith is very talented in art. She won Monroe's juried art competition in 2005 with a self portrait she'd painted. Daniel has always been very talented in theater. He's done over 15 shows that I can remember and the number keeps growing. I give him credit for dragging me into the theater. Had he not gotten a part in "On Golden Pond," I probably wouldn't be involved with the stage today.

I tell you this because there is a cost for having talented kids. Being creative doesn't alway equate to responsibility with the tools one uses in his/her art. Case in point: Daniel loves using the camera. He fancies himself to be a talented photographer. On many occasions, he has been the one helping me film my video blog. But I ran across a video Daniel made back in 2004. Clearly he was experimenting with dry ice. Don't get me started on where he got dry ice...that's another blog and a potential argument with my wife. What I want you to realize is he was using my WORK camera. I take photos of real estate every day and rely on my camera to make a living. Watch the treatment my camera received that day and understand that's just the way it is around here. I never know what to expect when I upload photos to the computer. Well at least you'll know why I buy so many cameras.

Buttermilk and a NyQuill Chaser

Something reminded me of a friend a couple of weeks ago. I don’t want to video blog tonight, so this story will have to suffice.

My friend’s name was Ryan but everybody knew him as “Buttermilk” or “Butter.” Unfortunately, Butter passed away several years after we were out of college. I can’t remember how he died, other than it was an illness. I didn’t even hear about his death until maybe a month after he was gone. So, I missed the funeral. In fact, I don’t recall any contact with Butter after I left Tech in 1980.

I met Butter the fall of 1977 when I enrolled at Tech. He was a couple of years older than me, but he was one of the guys that I immediately “hit it off with.” Every time I saw Butter, he had three things; and usually he was holding them in one hand…an open beer, a lit cigarette, and a pack of Marlboros. And Butter was usually laughing about something. He found the humor in life like I do.

Here’s what made me remember Butter. Angie was going through some old cd’s and found Bob Seger’s greatest hits. Seger has a song called “Turn The Page” which incidentally was Buttermilk’s favorite song back in college.

One winter night, Buttermilk called the fraternity house and I happened to answer the phone. "Catfish, I need someone to come over to the Pondarossa” (a nickname he and some other buddies called the house they rented). “I’m out here by myself and I’m drunk and I need some help.” Well, honestly, I was kind of scared. Butter could “tie one on” like the best of them and I didn’t have a clue what kind of help he needed. Having to deal with somebody as drunk as he sounded didn’t appeal to my good senses at that moment. At any rate, I took the 15 minute drive to the Pondarossa.

I found Buttermilk slumped over, half-sitting and half-lying on the floor, next the foosball table. He was happily inebriated and smoking away on his much-loved Marlboros. In the background was a cassette tape playing Bob Seger’s “Turn The Page.” Well, the “help” Butter needed was rewinding the tape. He had gotten so drunk that he couldn’t rewind the cassette to the exact point where the song began. While I was there, I must have rewound that tape a dozen times or more. “Turn The Page” was burned indelibly into my mind that night. During that time, Butter rambled on about life, school, and anything else that popped into his beer-soaked head. Finally he told me “Catfish, I need to get in bed. Can you get my NyQuil?” Turns out that Butter would take a shot of NyQuil every night before he went to bed. How he stomached the beer with a NyQuil chaser I don’t know. But he poured it down, climbed into bed, and was snoring before I left the room.

I don’t really have a point to this story other than to say how interesting our memories are. Isn’t it awe-inspiring how one song can remind you of something that happened so long ago. All of a sudden, you’re transported back in time and your memories seem so vivid…as if it just happened. I’d like to think that Butter would be tickled that I still find humor in everything. In fact, I hope we can share a laugh together someday in heaven.

Movie Night With Marky. Any Takers?

I love to watch movies. I love to make popcorn, eat candy, and watch cool flicks...especially with my friends. Would you like to come watch movies with me? I'm waiting....

Some People Have All the Fun

Lunch Bunch met Wednesday at the mall. Besides the usual goofy conversations and humorous stories, we even acted up in ways only overgrown kids like us can do. First thing that comes to mind was the group shout-out to Cindy and her daughter about 10 tables down. Yeah, and I don't think anyone at the food court noticed us.

Next came the Chick-fil-a cow. She was udderly moo-tee-ful...uh...I mean utterly beautiful! I learned you don't ask Mikey if he wants a picture with a mascot because the answer will always be "yes."

Plus, Mikey has this affable nature about him; so you can't help but take a photo with him. The last two photos prove my point.

Learning to Tap

Since I've taken the role of Spats in Sugar, I have to learn how to tap dance. I had my first tap rehearsal earlier this week and wore athletic shoes. Lesson 1: Rubber soles do not make for good tap shoes. A "shuffle" turns into a "stop on a dime." So I couldn't wait to get home and put on a pair of leather-soled shoes to try out my new moves.

Without my knowledge, Angie picked up the camera and started filming. There I was in all of my splendor...boxer briefs, tee shirt, and a pair of wingtips. Lesson 2: Never trust my wife with a camera. You'll be happy to know that there's no "full monty" on this video. I smudged and aged the film enough to present it to most viewers.

Be kind, though, I'm bearing my soles here.

I'm still going to post the Weekly Awards later tonight. Come back for results! Until then, enjoy this little video.

If Snow Won't Come To Us, Then....

I want to say two things. First, I realized today that Angie is on the same level as a six-year-old when it comes to snow. Second, when she opens her mouth during these impulsive moments, there's no mistaking she's from the south.

Excited by the forecast of snow, Angie was impetuously waiting outside. Unfortunately, in our area, it only sleeted; and, for Angie, that just wouldn't do. So, since the snow wouldn't come to us, we went to the snow. We packed in the car and drove to Ruston. This little video shows some of our escapades. Later we stopped at one of Ruston's coffee shops for some beignets and drinks. I was miserably cold, but Angie and Daniel seemed to have a great time.

Outtakes Now - Real Song Later

Pa (my dad) and I wrote a song over 25 years ago. It's one of Angie's favorite songs that I've written. The lyrics start out with "Cold weather's coming..." which is so appropriate for tonight.

It was my intention to bring the song to you tonight. Unfortunately, I haven't practiced the song in quite sometime and, when the camera was rolling, I flubbed a bunch of times. I found these outtakes to be more entertaining than the song itself. (I actually never got all the way through the song tonight without a mistake.)

What's really amusing is the exchange of love and support between Angie and me during the recording session. Angie was "enhancing" her hair at the time and the chemicals just about knocked me off my chair. All of you unmarried peeps need to pay special attention to the shower of affection we afford each other. Don't try this at home...we're professionals...we have 24 years of experience.

Thuggish Ruggish Bones - NOT!

I forgot about this little gem tucked away in my hard drive. Before Angie and Daniel created their "D-nizzle/A-rizzle" dance, she was trying to look like a playa. One problem...she doesn't have thuggish, ruggish bones. Don't worry, I'm not a playa hayta. I'm just calling it like I sees it, fo shizzle.

You be the judge. She was trying to "throw up the deuce" but she didn't have a clue what she was doing. Comedy ensues....

He Deserves a Standing O

I couldn't help myself this morning. Usually I blog at night, but I had something creative bursting out of me today. So I made a film to honor our comrade, Mikey.

As most of you know, Mikey is playing a newspaper dude in Streetcar, Marty Duckworth in Reality Bites Back, and Joe/Josephine/Millionaire in Sugar. That's a lot of work no matter how you slice it.

**Special Note** Turn up the volume after I get through speaking....I still haven't mastered the fine art of recording audio on my storybooks.

Car Wash Kit

This video was shot on Sunday. In fact, if you watch the video that I posted two days ago, you'll see my car in the yard; and this film will explain why.

Also, I decided to give y'all a random photo of my kids from the same day....just for good measure. We are a goofy bunch!

Friggin Blogger

I've tried several times to upload a video to blogspot tonight, but I'm having some technical difficulties. I assume it's a blogger.com issue. I've actually tried to get it to work by using Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Opera. So far, it’s not working with any of them. I've even tried to upload photos, but no dice! Dangblasted, stupid, @!*&^*&$%#@ blogger! Wait a tick, where's my thesaurus?

I'm really tired tonight and don't have the energy to fight this stupid uploading problem. If you want to crush me mentally and physically, here's how you do it. Get me to sit down and be quiet for and hour and a half! It literally drives me crazy. Tonight, sitting tacitly at rehearsal, just about did me in. I have to move...I have to joke around...I have to circulate in order to percolate. There it is....my Achilles heel. Please don't tell Lex Luther about my "kryptonite" because I've already got enough problems.

Why Not Something Different?

It's Sunday, so let's make this a Fun-day! I played around with some movie editing and created a little silly film. We shot this just before Meredith left to go back to LSU. John was acting goofy and singing. Daniel was impatiently waiting to go to "Swiss Family Robinson" auditions. Angie's in the background nervously tending to a flower I had accidentally stepped on.

Enjoy!

And here's some lagniappe. I was messing around with the camera while I was talking with Matt tonight. I purposely aged the film for effect and it turned out kind of cool.

Rapid Response and Awards

I caught a little, actually only an iddle-biddle, flack from the video last night. So I thought it would be appropriate to explain why I said what I said and to offer my motivations for making the video.

At the same time, I came up with an ingenious idea for weekly awards. Sunday, the last time I checked, is the beginning of a new week. So Saturday night should be the end, right? At the end of each week, we should have awards. And everybody wins!!!! Yah!!!! My video blog tonight will have awards listed at the end.

Enjoy and feel free to disagree, even if you're wrong...and you will be if you don't agree with me.
